Article Summary

People who've invested the time to research and visit your winery are valuable to your marketing efforts. Capturing their contact info in the tasting room is the quickest, most effective way to build a strong base of loyal customers. We've seen that WineDirect customers who build their customer list consistently outsell those that take transactions with no customer information - especially if they use Action Email. It's difficult to capture customer information in the tasting room; the staff gets busy, and lines get long.

Suppose a transaction doesn't have customer information when you swipe a credit card. In that case, customer capture will look across all our winery databases. If the customer exists in another database, we will pull across that customer's first name, last name, and email. On the receipt screen, the customer can opt into receiving newsletters from the winery.

To illustrate: a customer walks into Winery A, and they capture the first name, last name, and email, and then that same customer walks into Winery B. If the customer uses the same credit card at Winery B, the order will auto-populate the customer's first name, last name, and email.

This has been implemented in Square and other modern POS systems, and we think it's a great way for you to speed up data capturing.

Customer Capture FAQs

What data is shared?

The only data that is shared is the first name, last name, and email. Billing addresses, shipping addresses, or any transactional information will not be shared. Data will only be shared upon credit card swipe - so this means the customer must be physically present at Winery B.

How is security handled?

When a card is swiped a one-way hash (encryption that can’t be decrypted) is stored the customer capture database. When the card is swiped at another winery the one-way hash is compared to others stored in the database. Raw credit card data is never stored.

WineDirect does encrypt credit cards with two-way encryption (encryption and decryption) for club members and other credit card processes - but this particular function is a one-way hash and completely secure.

Can I opt out?

We realize that some of our winery clients don't want to participate in the customer capture program. To out out click the link below. If you would like to chat further with us about the feature please reach us at support@winedirect.com.
